Understanding Lingcod: Southeast Alaska’s Toothiest Predator

Understanding Lingcod: Southeast Alaska’s Toothiest Predator

Lingcod are one of the most aggressive and exciting fish you can encounter in Southeast Alaska. Despite their name, lingcod are not true cod. They are a unique species, famous for their broad, toothy mouths and powerful attacks on bait and lures. At Boardwalk Lodge on Prince of Wales Island, many guests are thrilled when they hook one of these ferocious predators.

Size and Habitat

Lingcod can grow very large, with some reaching over 50 inches and weighing more than 60 pounds. The current state record is a whopping 82 pounds 9 ounces caught in 2007 in the Gulf of Alaska. They live around rocky reefs, underwater ledges, and kelp forests, areas abundant around Prince of Wales Island. Their camouflage coloring, a mix of brown, green, and blue, helps them ambush unsuspecting prey like herring, salmon, and the occasional octopus.

The peak season for targeting lingcod at Boardwalk Lodge is late May through August. Anglers often catch them while fishing for halibut or jigging near rocky bottoms. Lingcod are fierce fighters, known for vigorous head shakes and deep dives, making every battle memorable.

Culinary Qualities and Regulations

Lingcod are also outstanding on the table. Their firm, white flesh is mild and flaky, perfect for grilling, frying, or baking. Many guests at Boardwalk Lodge say it’s one of the best-tasting fish they have ever tried. Because lingcod populations are carefully managed in Alaska, 2025 Boardwalk Lodge non-resident anglers are allowed one lingcod per day, two in possession, 30 to 35 inches or 55 inches and longer. There is an annual limit of 2 fish, one of which can be 30–35 inches, the other 55 inches or greater. Boardwalk Lodge staff will help guests understand and comply with these rules to support sustainable fishing practices.

Fishing for lingcod offers Boardwalk Lodge guests a thrilling and rewarding experience. Their explosive strikes, impressive size, and excellent taste make them a favorite highlight of any Southeast Alaska saltwater fishing adventure.
