Downriggers – Why We Like Them

Downriggers – Why We Like Them
Boardwalk Lodge Fishing Program utilizes proven technological methods to give our guests the best opportunity to catch their desired species. Southeast Alaska’s Unit 2C is home to many saltwater fish, most of which can be detected on our electronic fish finders, providing precise depth information. Once the depth is known, the captain prepares the downriggers for action. A downrigger is a fishing device that controls lure depth precisely during trolling. It consists of a boom to extend the lines away from the boat’s hull, a spool with a sturdy cable, a 10 to 20-pound cannonball weight, and a line release clip. Each angler’s fishing line attaches to a release clip connecting it to the cable. The weight is lowered to the desired depth using the powered spool. Within a few seconds, the lure or bait is at the correct depth.

How Downriggers Are Used at Boardwalk Lodge

Boardwalk Lodge captains usually troll around 1.8 to 2.8 MPH, depending on water conditions. Once the line is baited or the lure chosen, each angler strips off about 30 to 45 feet of line before the line is clipped to the cable. One line will be clipped just above the cannonball, the other about 10 feet up the cable. Once the ball goes down, the captain will assist each angler in getting the proper tension on the line and then assist in getting the rods into the rod holders. The fun part for the anglers is watching for a strike. Sometimes the rod bends and jerks violently. Sometimes the strike is just a tiny twitch in the rod tip. In any case, once the fish hits, the line releases from the clip, allowing the angler to fight the fish directly, without any additional weight to fight.

Benefits of Downriggers

Downriggers at Boardwalk Lodge on Prince of Wales Island are electric-powered for more effortless operation. We usually fish two anglers per downrigger; each boat carries two downriggers. We effectively target fish at specific depths. Using a downrigger improves bait presentation and increases the chances of catching the desired fish species.

Why Downriggers Work Well in Southeast Alaska

Trolling with downriggers allows for consistent lure and bait depth, even as tides change. This adaptability is beneficial in Southeast Alaska's dynamic marine environment. Downriggers enable anglers to cover more water efficiently, increasing the chances of locating active fish. By targeting specific depths, downriggers help reduce bycatch of non-target species. This fishing style supports sustainable fishing practices.
