TRADITIONAL TOTEM

The village of Kasaan offers a rare glimpse into Alaska’s past, showcasing a rich Native history and culture. Located on Prince of Wales Island’s eastern side, this historic Haida settlement is renowned for its totem poles and preserved heritage.

VILLAGE CENTERPIECE

Established in the 1800s, Kasaan was once only accessible by canoe, but now scenic roads lead visitors to this remarkable site. The village’s centerpiece is the Whale House, North America’s oldest standing longhouse, originally built without nails and carefully restored.

The grounds also feature nine historic totem poles leading to cemeteries, offering a profound connection to the past. Visitors can explore on self-guided tours, but guided Tribal Tours provide a deeper understanding, led by Haida Nation members sharing personal narratives.
